Our Rangatahi Environmental Internship is a comprehensive training and development programme based in and around the Waihī catchment.
The inaugural cohort completed the programme in the 2023/24 summer period under the nurturing supervision of programme kaiwhakahaere, Awhina Awhimate.
Over the course of about eight weeks, 10 interns worked across the rohe, learning how to protect and care for the whenua and wai throughout the catchment, from planting and pest control to monitoring and in-water work.
The internship has been designed to help those embarking on a conservation career path to better understand their employment opportunities, develop essential skills, achieve certifications, gain confidence, build connections, and form a deeper understanding of our role as kaitiaki.
The internship is more than just a job; it is an opportunity to contribute to the restoration and preservation of Waihī estuary while gaining invaluable experience and knowledge in the field of environmental conservation.
If you or any of your whānau might be interested in a future summer internship, please get in touch at korero-mai@waihi-estuary.iwi.nz
