Our incredible kaitiaki taiao worked extremely hard over the summer, completing litter surveys of the area alongside Maketu Climate Change Co-ordinator, Laura Rae.

They also spent time with conservationist and Maketu local, Julian Fitter, learning about the restoration of the dotterel and gull colonies on the Maketu Spit.
The kaitiaki taiao were also responsible for setting fish traps, to monitor the tributaries that feed into the Waihī Estuary. On their journey across the estuary, they were fortunate enough to witness elvers (baby eels) migrating upstream.
We’re incredibly proud of their dedication to the taiao, and we are thrilled to provide them with the opportunity to grow their capacity and capability as kaitiaki.
